Join The Student Blogging Challenge NOW — Starts Sept 6!

It’s time!  The latest student blogging challenge starts September 6 and ends in November –to participate just fill out this registration form on Miss Wyatt’s blog!

About the Student Blogging Challenge

Our last blogging challenge had over 1000 students, from 15 countries, aged 6 to 18 years old, writing posts, commenting and getting to know about each others cultures while improving their blogging skils and connecting to a global audience.

The growth of the students’ blogging skills during each challenge is totally amazing and inspiring; check out these examples of student work.

The Challenge Categories

This time we’ve expanded the challenge into two separate categories; both designed to improved your skills.

Students (or classes) can choose to participate in either or both:

  1. Better Bloggers Challenge – emphasis on better blogging, improving your blog design and connecting to a global audience
  2. Better Commenter Challenge – focusing how you write comments, whether you are trying to continue conversations through comments and how to write posts that invite lots of comments

The reason why we’ve added the comment challenge is commenting is an important part of blogging.  It’s often where most learnng happens.

Unfortunately educating students on effective commenting practices is hard.  We hope to change this while also providing new tasks for students who’ve participated in previous challenges.

What’s Involved

Both the Better Bloggers and Commenters categories will have weekly activities for:

  1. Students who have their own blog
  2. Students who don’t have their own blog but want to participate through commenting
  3. Classes who want to participate through their classroom blog

These weekly activities are designed to improved your skills.  Don’t stress if you miss a week — the tasks are designed so they can be completed later!

To participate you need to:

  1. Discuss with your teacher
  2. Drop past Miss Wyatt’s blog and register your details
  3. If you are participating as part of a classroom blog you will need to get your teacher to register your class
  4. Keep an eye on Miss Wyatt’s blog for the blogging challenge information and your weekly task

What Do Your Students Really Think About Blogging?

The student and class bloggers have been working hard and submitted some incredible entries for The Edublogger’s Student Competition.  Strongly recommend you read through the comments to follow links across to their posts.  Definitely will be showcasing these posts over the next few weeks.

To get us started I’m hoping you can help out!

Hayley and Sophie have both created different blogging surveys for students to complete.  I’m looking forward to their analysis of the responses (as others probably are).  Obviously the more responses the better — so could you please ask your students to drop past and complete their surveys?

Both surveys have been created using Survey Monkey and will only take a few minutes to complete.  Each have asked different questions!

Here’s Haley’s survey!

Here’s Sophie’s Survey!

Plus I’m sure both Hayley and Sophie would love you to drop past their blogs and leave a comment about your thoughts!

I’m sure they would love your feedback on:

  1. What did you think of the idea of the survey?
  2. How did you find the questions?
  3. Are there any questions you would have added or changed?

FINAL THOUGHTS

Remember any class or student blogger can enter The Edublogger’s Student Competition – you have until April 30.

Looking For Global Projects For Your Students?

Image of world eyeLooking for activities to do with your students?

Here’s a couple of projects that I’m watching that might interest you.  Meanwhile if you know of any other projects that would interest educators – please leave a comment to share so we can all check them out.

Connecting Student Bloggers

Last year Miss Wyatt coordinated an International student blogging competition over 10 weeks from September to December.  It involved 500 students and classes from 9 countries of the world who participated by writing posts on class blogs, student blogs or as commenters.

By the end many expressed a desire to continue so the blog Bringing us together has been created to:

  • build on the friendships begun in 2008
  • encourage more students and classrooms from throughout the World to connect with each other

As a student or teacher, you can get involved with Bringing us together blog in various ways including:

  1. Writing your own posts and/or comments in response to their posts
  2. Using ideas from the blog for your own blogging and collaboration projects
  3. Volunteering for your class to be in charge of this blog for 2 weeks (contact Miss Wyatt)

Currently Ms Smith’s class is responsible for Bringing us together and her students have written some great posts.  Haley and Sophie has asked …what kind of pet makes you go YEOW!?, Sam and Michael G. have discussed things you look for in a friend while Brianne and Brittany made me very hungry with their cooking tips for after school snacks.

Students would love to hear your feedback! Can you tell us how is Bringing us together going by leaving a comment?  (Yes – if you leave a comment I will visit and leave comment on your blog 8) )

Skyping Around The World

Silvia Tolisano (Langwitches) is coordinating a project called Around the World with 80 schools.  She has written an excellent series of posts on this including tips for using Skype to connect classrooms:

  1. Reasons for Skyping in the Classroom
  2. Around The World with 80 Schools
  3. Update- Around The World With 80 Schools
  4. Map of Participants Around The World with 80 Schools
  5. Skype Connection Rituals
  6. We are Off! First Connection in Around the World with 80 Schools

You can also check out information on the Around the World with 80 schools wiki!

Strongly recommend that you consider joining this project or consider the concepts of these types of projects and how you might use them in your schools.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Would love to hear about other projects that would interest educators – please leave a comment to share.

Don’t forget if you’re interesting in skyping with other classrooms check out this page of The Edublogger and you can add your class to the list by leaving your contact details on this post.  I’m updating the list again soon!
