As promised here’s my follow up post on general blogging questions asked during Richard Byrne and my ISTE Unplugged blogging session and in comments on my What Do You Want to KNOW about Blogging? post.

The aim of the post is to help educators and students with their personal blogging.

For my responses to student blogging questions refer to What You Wanted To KNOW About Student Blogging.

Want my blog to be well read and have a great appearance

Here’s my thoughts including recommended widgets:

Always put the most important widgets at the top of your blog

Search widget – top of blog or top of sidebar

RSS feed using Feedburner – here’s how to add it to your blog

Subscribe by email using Feedburner – here’s how to add Feeburner email subscription to your blog

Effectively use both categories and tags on your post to make it easier to find posts – here’s the difference between categories and tags

Place category widget above tag widget in your sidebar

Consider all widgets you add very carefully. Do you really NEED them? Do they help or distract from your blog appearance and content?

AVOID excessive use of bold, italics and colored font in posts

Use headings, number listed, bullet lists, short paragraphs to break posts into manageable chunks– here’s my first five tips for writing better blog posts

Use images effectively to engage attention –- read these posts:

Copyright and Using Images in Blog Posts

Finding and Adding Creative Commons Images To Your Blog Posts

Uploading Photos From Digital Cameras Into Blog Posts

Avoid blog themes with strong colors or text that is too small that distract the reader from content and make them not want to read it

Choose a blog title that is immediately meaningful and relevant to first time visitors – this can make or break their decision to become a subscriber.

For example, the original name Mobile Technology in TAFE for my personal blog is a classic example of a REALLY bad blog title

Here’s what to consider when choosing a blog theme.

And think about using your own custom image header like I’ve done on my personal blog – here’s how to upload custom image headers

Do a first time reader audit on your blog

A good approach to improving your blog appearance is to “Do a first time reader audit on your blog” by:

Following Darren Rowse’s Run a First Time Reader Audit on Your Blog instructions to observe how someone who has never read your blog navigates it

Contacting a few experience bloggers and ask them to do a quick audit of your blog to give you advice on what works and what doesn’t

How you see your blog and what you write about is often totally different from how viewed by others

What experienced bloggers spot differ from someone who normally doesn’t read blogs.

Can you tell how many times your blog has been viewed?

Knowing how many times your blog has been view doesn’t give you a true reflection of your readership.

Blog readership is made up of two totally separate components:

People who visit your blog site

Readers who subscribe to your blog using RSS or email subscription

The number of people who read your blog by visiting your blog site is generally considerably lower than those that subscribe by RSS or email subscription.

To understand your readership and changes you need to:

Set up Google Analytics for your blog

Set up Feeburner RSS and email subscription

PostRank is also good for monitoring other engagement factors.

How can a blogger attract more readers?

Hard question because it’s a combination of factors including:

1. Your blog’s appearance

Some bloggers write great content but:

Their blog theme and sidebar clutter distracts readers from appreciating the great content

Lay out of their posts makes their posts hard to read - here’s my first five tips for writing better blog posts

2. Type of posts and how frequently you publish posts:

Bloggers like Stephen Downes, Larry Ferlazzo and Richard Brynes all have high readership because they all:

Have high posts frequency (post several posts per day)

Publish posts that provide great information for their readers

As a general rule high posts frequency combined with great content increases readership faster than low post frequency with great content.

But you don’t always need high posting frequency to have high readership.

For example, some one like Vicki Davis posts less frequently but has high readership because of her great content and amazing support of the educational community.

It’s worth checking out Post Rank’s Education list even though their list is based on engagement factors (as opposed to readership) — to check out different edublogging approaches.

3. Connecting with others

Being a blogger isn’t just about publishing posts.

It’s also about reading others posts, taking time to comment on their posts (in meaningful ways), engaging with your readers by commenting back when they leave comments — being a good blog citizen.

A natural part of connecting with others means that more people are likely to become aware of your work.

Don’t forget that linking to someone else’s post is an important part of blogging. Why?

Because reading posts that talks about other bloggers or their posts but doesn’t include links to them is really frustrating for readers. Readers like to follow the links and check out the information in more detail but without the links they can’t!

And when you include links to another bloggers post it sends a pingback to that blogger. Most bloggers check out pingback to their blogs.

Here’s more information on What’s A Pingback? And How To Write Links

But please note — I can’t stress meaningful ways enough when connecting with others, writing comments or using pingbacks.

4. How you make people aware of your posts

I know other bloggers feel uncomfortable about this as myself.

But nowadays increasingly readers are reading blog posts by links shared on twitter rather than RSS. So it is now a good idea to tweet when you’ve written a new post.

If you’re not currently using twitter – here’s how to get started.

Bloggers are also using Facebook to connect with more readers – here’s how you do it.

How do you get more people to read your blog and comment?

Increasing readership doesn’t necessarily lead to more comments.

As a general rule if you publish several post per day readers are less likely to comment on posts than if you publish posts two or three times per week.

Scheduling posts several days apart gives readers time to process your posts and means they are more likely to write comments.

However, it does all depend on how you’ve written your post. Has your post invited a response?

There are skills to writing posts that make readers want to comment — my Comment Count post should give you some ideas.

What are your best practices to ensure uninterrupted publishing posts?

We’re all always busy — so time can be a challenge.

The key is work out what routine works best you and set up a system that helps you.

For example, decide how often you want to publish posts? Several times daily, once daily or a few times a week?

As a general rule writing a post 2-3 times a week is more achievable for most educators. So how you do it is decide that Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days your posts will publish.

And to make life easier you can write the posts at the same time and then schedule to post on those days.

Some bloggers also find using a calendar where you plan the topic of your posts helps. While I’ll also use Google Document which I update with new post ideas.

How do you determine “worthy” topics to attract readers

Really gets back to the reason why you blog.

For many edubloggers blogging is a bit about their readers and a lot about their own personal needs to reflect on what they are learning or what they want to share.

One of the commonest mistakes I see made by new blogggers is focusing on what they think their readers want to read.

My advice is forget about your readers and focus on your own needs. You’ll be more passionate and it’ll come through in your posts.

And never assume that someone’s already written what you’re saying.

Have bloggers block. How do I get going again, post length, finding my voice etc

Don’t feel alone — we all suffer from it at some stage.

Some find having a break helps.

Whereas breaks don’t help me and the best solution is to force myself to write the post (any post) to get back into my blogging routine.

Post length

Post length is an interesting topic. As a general rule shorter posts are more likely to get comments while longer posts are more likely to be bookmarked.

It’s really about what works for both you and your readers.

For example, this post is definitely too long but I didn’t want to break into a series of posts because I normally post twice weekly. Would it have been better as separate posts for each question? Probably!

Finding your voice

Each blogger has their own distinct writing style which we often call their voice.

Once you’ve got your blogging routine back I’m sure you’ll find your voice comes back with it.

Final thoughts

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

We now have a whopping 137 Edublogs themes to choose from ranging from:

Those that can’t be altered to themes that are “extremely customizable”

Standard blog themes to very unique themes including photoblog, magazine, newspaper, twitter and Facebook themes.

Which is excellent!

Important Theme Changes

And we’ve made some important changes to the themes:

Threaded comments – All themes now support threaded comments and any user can activate this feature.

Custom Image Headers - almost all themes now allow you to upload your own custom image header.

Comments on Pages – most themes now support comments on pages

Full posts on Category page - most themes now display full posts on category pages for those users who are using their blogs as photoblogs

You activate the threaded comments feature as follows:

1. Go to Settings > Discussion.

2. Select Enable threaded (nested) comments

3. Scroll to bottom of page and click Save Changes

Please disable threaded comment plugin before enabling threaded comments via Settings > Discussion.

Categorizing the themes

Since you can spend considerable trying to find the “perfect theme” we’ve helped make your task easier we’ve categorizing the 137 themes based on:

Layout – number of columns

Color Scheme and how customizable the theme is

Ability to upload custom image header – those that allow are shown as recommended header image dimensions, in pixels, to upload (written as width by height)

Presence or absence of links to pages as navigation tabs at the top of the theme – as shown in page link column as Yes/No

Presence or absence of tagline in blog header – as shown in display tagline column as Yes/No

Uniqueness

ONE COLUMN THEMES

Single Column themes have a central post area with no sidebar.

These theme appeal to people who like to keep their theme simple by preventing the clutter often created by sidebar widgets.

All widgets are located at the bottom of the blog on one column themes.

Two Column themes normally a wide column for content with a narrower sidebar.

These are the most common theme layout and location of the sidebar (left or right) is personal preference.

Two Column themes with right sidebar are the most common theme layout so we’ve separated these themes based on color scheme.

White themes

This is an update version of The 100 Edublogs Themes Separated Into Categories To Make Choosing Your Next Theme Easier post!

Given there are 100 Edublogs themes to choose from ranging from those that can’t be altered to themes that are “extremely customizable” you can spend considerable time testing themes to find the “perfect theme”.

So to help make your task easier we’ve categorizing the 100 themes based on:

Layout – number of columns

Color Scheme and how customizable the theme is

Ability to upload custom image header – those that allow are shown as recommended header image dimensions, in pixels, to upload (written as width by height)

Presence or absence of links to pages as navigation tabs at the top of the theme – as shown in page link column as Yes/No

Presence or absence of tagline in blog header – as shown in display tagline column as Yes/No

ONE COLUMN THEMES

Single Column themes have a central post area with no sidebar.

These theme appeal to people who like to keep their theme simple by preventing the clutter often created by sidebar widgets.

All widgets are located at the bottom of the blog on one column themes.

TWO COLUMN THEMES WITH LEFT SIDEBAR

Two Column themes normally a wide column for content with a narrower sidebar.

These are the most common theme layout and location of the sidebar (left or right) is personal preference.

TWO COLUMN THEMES WITH RIGHT SIDEBAR

Two Column themes with right sidebar are the most common theme layout so we’ve separated these themes based on:

Ability to upload custom image header

Colour scheme

With custom image header

Without custom image header

Black, White and Grey themes without custom image header

THREE COLUMN THEMES WITH LEFT AND RIGHT SIDEBAR

Three column themes have either:

Sidebars side-by-side on one side of the blog

Sidebars on either side of the wider content column

THREE COLUMN THEMES WITH RIGHT SIDEBARS

The most appealing aspect of three column themes is the ability to place more widgets in the sidebar.

Sidebars side-by-side three column themes on one side of the blog allows you to use this aspect well.

The content column is often the same width as the other columns. This type of layout tends to be cluttered looking and less suited to reading lengthy content.

However this category includes themes like CommentPress which is very unique.

CommentPress is ideal for writing collaborative documents or for providing resources because its Table of Content Skin places the oldest post at the top table of contents and your readers can comment paragraph by paragraph!

There are a few situations where bloggers don’t want their front page (‘Home’) to display their latest post and want a static page instead.

About Static Front Pages

Educators occasionally use a static home page to provide background information to parents or students about the purpose of the blog. Their Home page normally contains content that rarely changes and latest posts are viewed by clicking on the link to the Posts page.

As this is a common ‘how do you’ question in the Edublogs forum, which can be tricky, I’ve decided to write detailed instructions. Yes, I’ve used screenshots of the latest version of WordPress MU since Edublogs is upgrading soon. The method is the same regardless of version.

Please remember this isn’t necessarily your best option. Take the time to first learn more about:

How To Create a Static Home Page

1. Go to Page > Add New

2. Give the page the title Home, write the content you want displayed on the front page of your blog and click then Publish.

3. Click Page > Add New again and create a new page titled Posts. You don’t need to add content to this page since this is the page that will display your latest posts.

4. Go to Settings > Reading

5. Change your settings to A Static page with Front page: Home and Post Page: Posts and then click Save Changes.

The front page of your blog should contains the content that your wrote for the Home page and your latest posts are viewed by clicking on the link to the Posts page.

However with some themes you end up with two Home links. This happens because many themes are hard coded to display “Home” link even when there are no other pages on the blog.

To remove the second Home link you just edit the Home page to make it a sub page of another page.

How Make Sub Pages

1. Go to Pages > Edit

2. Hover over Title Home to bring up action links and click on Edit

3. In the attribute module change the page from being a main page (parent) to be locating under another page (its parent page) and click Update Page. In the example below the home page is now located under the About page.

Tip: If you’re planning to delete the About page you would locate it under the post page.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Can you share a link to your blog If you use a static homepage so others see how you are using it? Can you also explain why you have chosen this approach as opposed to a front post page?

Are you like me? Driven by a strong desire to add that individual touch to your blog using a custom image header? But through not fault of your own designing your own image header always turns out BAD?

There is a solution! Instead of trying to design your own image header visit Free Web Page Headers. All their image headers are provided under Creative Commons Attribution Non Commerical license. This means you can use them, with adaptation if you desire, provided you acknowledge the original source and don’t use them for a commerical purpose.

This is how I did it on my personal blog:

Searched Nature category on Free Web Page Headers looking for a header with adequate space to add words to left hand side of header

You upload a nice new custom image header. Or you rename your blog categories! But when you visit your blog site these new changes haven’t appeared and you see the old version of your blog.

Rest assured you aren’t crazy!

But until you understand the culprit lies with your browser’s cache and learn how to clear your browser cache it will drive you crazy.

What Is A Browser Cache?

When you visit a web page for the first time web browsers such as Internet Explorer, FireFox, Flock and Safari save a copy of that page and its graphics on your computer. The next time you visit an ‘already visited web page’ it grabs the saved copy of the page from your computer’s hard drive. This makes the page load and render faster because it doesn’t have to grab all the information from the web server that hosts the web page.

This ‘saved copy on your computer’s hard drive’ is known as your browser cache. It’s normally a good feature unless you need to view the latest version of a web page.

How To Clear Your Web Browser

Web browsers do vary in terms of what method you use to clear their cache. However the fastest method is to use the shortcut key Ctrl + F5 (press and hold the Ctrl key while pressing F5). This will reload the web page you are viewing while clearing the cache for most web browsers on Windows including FireFox, Flock and Internet Explorer 7.

On a Mac the short cut keys to reload and clear cache are CMD + R (press and hold the CMD key while pressing R) – thanks Patrick Malley for realizing I had forgotten instructions for Macs.

So the next time you make changes to your blog’s design and are still seeing the old version of your blog remember to try clearing your cache.

Which blog themes allow readers to write comments on pages is a common question asked in the Edublogs forum.

Problem is some themes allow comments on pages and others don’t. To find the answer you need to try each theme, which is a lengthy process. It took me hours to Separate the 100 Edublogs themes Into Categories To Make Choosing Your Next Theme Easier.

Thanks to Ginny Paisie from Paisie Perusals we now have the answer because she both road tested all the themes and shared the results in the forum.

UPDATE:

While I was writing this post Paul Beaufait had a similar idea and has written a post:

explaining why being able to write comments on pages is a handy feature for students

and also set up a Google Form for you to leave details if your theme allows comments

We would REALLY love it if you could check the list above and drop past Paul’s post and complete his form to confirm if your theme does/doesn’t allow comments on pages.

Please remember also to take the time to drop past Ginny’s blog to thank her!

The Facts

Approx. 50 people visit my blog site each day.

Main web browsers used for viewing my blog are FireFox (52.93 % ), Internet Explorer (39.93 %) and Safari (4.87 %).

Approx. 750 people subscribe to my blog and read my posts using a Feed Reader.

Main feed readers used by my readers are Google Reader (68 %) and Bloglines (7 %).

Approx. 35 people prefer to read my posts via email (Feedburner email subscription).

What The Facts Mean

Even with great content people are less likely to subscribe or continuing subscribing to your blog if your posts are hard to read. It’s important to ensure your posts look nice and are easy to read on your blog, when read in feed readers and by email.

You check this by:

Regularly examining the appearance of your blog using a few web browsers! (Read more here)

Subscribing to your blog in a Feed Reader!

Subscribing to your email subscription!

Here’s how to set up:

FINAL THOUGHTS

So how did you go:

Notice any problems that you need to rectify when you viewed your blog in different web browsers?

What are your posts like when read in a feed reader like Google Reader? Have any of the embeds you’ve added been removed?

Given there are 100 Edublogs themes available for you to use ranging from themes that can’t be altered to themes that are “extremely customizable” you can spend quite a bit of time testing themes to find the “perfect theme”. So I’ve decided to help make your task a bit easier (I hope) by categorizing the Edublogs themes based on:

Layout – number of columns

Color Scheme

Ability to upload own image header

Presence or absence of page links in blog header

Presence or absence of tagline in blog header

Ability to customize theme

One Column Themes

Single Column themes have a central post area with no sidebar. These theme appeal to people who like to keep their theme simple by preventing the clutter often created by sidebar widgets. All widgets are located at the bottom of the blog on one column themes.

72 Classes – Minmalist white theme with black trim

Ambiru - light grey theme and able to upload your own custom image header (500 x 225 pixels)

Day Dream – offers four different headers to choose from pink with flowers, blue, grey or green leaves

GreenDay – Olive green theme with content located on left of page; doesn’t look anything like supplied screenshot in theme selection area

Roundflow – Extremely customisable theme. Able to change width of column, type of font used on blog and colors of header, background & text

Simplr – This theme allows you to configure some variables to suit your blog such as font size, font type

Striped Plus – Extremely customisable theme that allows you to change width of blog, type of font used on blog, colors of header, background & text and upload own images to use for header and background

One column themes with additional features:

Links to pages in blog header - Ambiru, Day Dream, Green Day, Roundflow and Simplr.

Includes tagline in blog header – Day Dream, Green Day, Roundflow and Simplr

Two Column Themes with Left Sidebar

Anarchy - Black theme with red headings and white text.

Benevolence – Simplistic theme which allows you to upload your own custom image header (700 x 225 pixels).

Borderline chaos – Theme has funky modern color scheme

Fauna - theme has a light grey background image with patterns and allows you to upload your own custom image header (780 x 200 pixels). Posts have a white background.

Pink Kupy – Very pretty in pink with pink patterns in the header. The post column is really narrow with the post background color of pink and the text written in darker pink.

Solipsus – Black and grey tones theme with simple pattern header. The post column is quite narrow and the post background color is grey.

Suhweet – Minmalist purplish theme with the background colour of post light purple.

Tarskei - White simple feeling theme that allows you to upload your own custom image header (720 x 180 pixels)

White as milk – Extremely white theme with a white header and felt too white for me.

WordPress Silver II – Clean white theme that allows you to customize your image header using a Flickr tag.

Heminway – Black theme that can be changed to white. Technically speaking it is a two column theme but is unusual in that it columns display posts and the widgets are located below like a one column theme. Didn’t partially like this theme because it displays the latest post as a partial post and you have to click on a link to read the full post.

Two column themes with left sidebar additional features:

Links to pages in blog header - Fauna, Suhweet, Tarskei and WordPress Silver II

Includes tagline in blog header – Pink Kupy, White as Milk, Suhweet, Tarskei and WordPress Silver II

Two Column Themes with Right Sidebar

Two Column themes with right sidebar are the most Edublogs most common theme layout so it has been necessary to break these themes into several categories based on: those that allow you to upload your own image header; and then the remaining themes were categorized based on the theme’s color scheme.

Those that allow you to upload your own image header are:

Blix – 690 x 115 pixels. Blue Green simple theme.

Connections – 741 x 142 pixels. Stylish theme.

Four Column Themes

CommentPress – Incredibly unusual blog theme. It offers two skin options:

Table of Contents skin – which would work well if you wanted to use it for writing a document or wanted to just use the site for providing assignment information (link to the oldest post appears at the top table of contents)

CommentPress Skin – provides readers the ability to comment paragraph by paragraph in the margins of a text.

Fjords – Bluish grey tone theme with all four columns the same width which means that the post column is excessively narrow and not well suited to lengthy content. It does allow you to upload your own custom image header ( 900 x 200 pixels ).

Quadruple - Navy blue header with blue tone theme with one sidebar on left and two on right. The post area is slightly narrower due to having four columns.

Most Customisable Themes

These themes provide greater opportunity for customizing if you want to change color of your blog based on font color code or change font type.

Roundflow - One Column. Can change the colors on the blog, width of column and type of font used.

Simplr - One Column. Able to change width of column and type of font used.

FINAL THOUGHT

With 100 Edublogs themes there is a chance I accidentally made a mistake like missed your theme, got a color wrong etc. I’d really appreciate it if you could check the information I supplied for your theme and let me know if I need to make any corrections or missed a theme off the most customizable list. Would also like to hear which theme(s) you like/dislike and why.

You only have a limited time to make the right impression for first time readers; blog theme, post layout and blog clutter all impact on first impressions. Great content is easily missed if your blog theme is distracting or off putting.

Tips for Road testing Blog Themes

New bloggers often spend considerable time changing their blog theme to work out which theme works best for them.

When road testing blog themes make sure that you have:

Several posts on your blog and at least one with an image added e.g. have at least 3 posts published (you can always delete)

In one of the post include all heading styles so that you can see the font color, size and type of each heading style

Add comments to two of the posts (you can always delete)

Edublogs provides 100 themes for you to choose from ranging from themes that can’t be altered i.e. “use as is” to themes that are “extremely customizable” i.e. change image header, font types, font color and background color. You change your theme by clicking on Design > Theme in your blog dashboard and then click on the theme you want to use.

Features worth considering when choosing a blog theme include:

1. What Is Your Preferred Layout?

Blog themes normally include a header, a content area (for your posts), sidebar area (for your widgets) and come in several standard layouts:

Single column with no sidebar (widgets are located at the bottom of the blog)

Two Column – normally a wide column for content and narrower sidebar

Three Column – with sidebars side-by-side on one side of the blog or either side of the wider content column

Four Column – one content column and three sidebars. The content column is often the same width as the other columns. This type of layout tends to be cluttered looking and less suited to reading lengthy content.

Two or three column are the most commonly used layouts. When considering layout you need to think about which side(s) do you prefer the sidebar to be located? Also make sure you check out the width of the blog and the post area.

2. Do you want your tagline displayed in the blog header?

The concept behind a blog tagline is to create a memorable phrase that sums up the tone and premise of a blog. Ideally all blogs should have a tagline since they instantly tell first time readers what your blogs all about and whether you write posts in topic areas that interest them.

3. Do you want to be able to upload your own Custom Image Header?

Being able to upload your own custom image header means you can add your “own personal touch” to your blog plus you can use it as a work around for blog themes that don’t include taglines i.e. Add the tagline to the image header using tools like PhotoShop.

4. Do you want links to pages in the blog header?

Some blog themes have links to pages in their blog header while on other themes you use the page widget in your sidebar. I personally like to have page links in my header to make it easier for readers to navigate pages on my blogs.

5. What are your preferred color scheme?

When choosing your theme remember that if color scheme makes your content hard to read you will lose readers. So balance your personal preferences with readability since ultimately you want people to read your content.

Don’t just look at the overall color — remember to check closely the color of: the header; the background; post text and links; post titles; headings in posts; widget titles and links.

When choosing color schemes it is worth doing audit of your blog by watching a first time reader read your blog to observe how they are interacting with the content on the site. Don’t talk to them while they navigate through your site just record how they interact and what engages/distracts them. Once finished ask them questions like:

What were their first impressions were?

What captured their attention?

What distracted them?

Do they have suggestions on how you could improve your blog?

While most of the standard Edublogs themes color schemes can’t be altered i.e. “use as is” there are a few themes that allow you to change the theme’s color.

6. What type of font do you like?

Most of the standard Edublogs themes don’t provide the ability to change font type i.e. “use as is” however there are a few themes that allow you to change their font.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’ve tried to cover the basics of choosing an Edublogs theme for your blog. But would love to hear about:

What you look for when choosing a blog theme?

Which themes you have found are easier for students to use?

Are there any blog themes that really popular with your students?
