About The Edublogs Awards

The Edublog Awards is a community based incentive that has been running for 5 years on a voluntary basis. The purpose of the Edublog awards is promote and demonstrate the educational values of social softwares.

The best aspects of the Edublog awards is it creates a fabulous resource for educators to use for ideas on how social software is used in different contexts, with a range of different learners; which means we are introduced to new sites that we might not have found if not for the awards process.

This year there are fourteen categories, including best individual blog, best teacher blog, best new blog, best group blog, best new blog, and best resource sharing blog. Nominations are open to anyone and close at the end of November.

Besides the winner badge and respect of your peers, winners of each category will get a years free Edublogs Campus subscription for themselves or their institution worth US$900. Voting for the finalists starts at the beginning of December.

Calling All CLASS blogs…Please Share Your Blog URL With Us!

Image of a light bulbWhen setting up a new blog it’s always handy check out other people’s blogs for ideas.

So I’ve been thinking it would be really helpful to everyone, especially new educators, if we had a page on The Edublogger for links to class blogs called Check out Class Blogs. The list could also be helpful for people wanting to create connections with classrooms in other countries.

So I was wondering if you could help me? Do you have a class blog or are able to recommend some class blogs?

Can you please share with us:

  1. Blog name(s) and URL(s).
  2. Approximate age of students and are they primary, secondary or tertiary?
  3. If applicable, what subject area? e.g. maths, science, language, history, English, Art, Music, ELL, ESL, & EFL
  4. Country

Thanks to Sue Tapp for reminding me that this task was on my to-do list!

STOP! Don’t Press Publish! Have You Remembered to Add The LINKS?

Image of a linkAre you remembering to link to articles, websites or other blogger’s post when you write about them? Why NOT?

It’s really frustrating when you can’t check out more details in a post because the blogger’s failed to link. Readers won’t waste their time Googling to find the facts. Why BOTHER — it’s easier to change to another blogger.

Linking is a really important part of being a blogger and linking isn’t hard! Yet for some reason most new bloggers FAIL to link!

How To Create A LinkImage of copying link

  1. Copy the URL of the website you want to link to.
  2. In the post that you are writing highlight the text you want linked to the website and click on Insert/Edit Link button, paste the URL and then click INSERT.Image of linking

It’s good blogging etiquette to link to:

  1. A person’s blog if you mention a blogger
  2. The post if you are talking about a particular post on a blog

For example: Larry Ferlazzo is well known for sharing websites that will help you teach. Check out his Best Social Studies Websites — 2008

FINAL THOUGHTS

Most bloggers like to check out posts when people write about them and some will take the time to write comments on your posts. Linking to other bloggers is one way of increasing the conversation and readership of your blog.

What tips on blogging would you give new bloggers?
