One of the most powerful aspects of blogging is anyone, anywhere can have a voice to express opinions and make a difference.
Blog Action Day is an excellent way of demonstrating the power of this voice; so I’m hoping you will join with us for Blog Action Day by writing a post about poverty on October 15th and encouraging others to join us!
Background
Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day.
It began in 2007 when a few bloggers started asking how they could use their medium to do something socially conscious. It started with a little “What if …” question about getting lots of bloggers to post on the same day about the same issue. This resulted in 20,000 bloggers with a combined audience in the millions posting about the Environment.
This year the theme is Poverty. By working together on one issue on the same day– October 15th — the blogging and podcasting community can change the conversation on the web and focuses audiences around the globe on the issue of World poverty. The hope is by starting a global discussion we can all help bring about both personal actions and a raised awareness for global poverty action going on.

Ways To Get Involved
Blog Action Day works best if bloggers keep writing about the topic they regularly write about. For example you could write about:
- How education helps lift people out of poverty
- What schools and student life is like in poorer countries
- What schools and students can do to participate in social action against poverty

You could also get involved with:
- Raising funds to fight poverty
- Stand Up Against Poverty – October 17-19th
- Learn About Poverty – World Vision Australia has organized prizes for Australian’s who write the best three blog posts about poverty on Blog Action Day
Besides writing a post about poverty on October 15th you can also:
- Add a badge to your sidebar or post to promote the event – Use the code under the desired badge
- Register your blog – You don’t have to register to participate however the link they provide when you register will help them track all the posts.

Hi Sue,
Our whole school blog learnt about the blog action day from Nadine , one of the Sydney allstars bloggers. My students love reading her blogs and we have linked her so they can read some of the amazing stuff she writes about. One of my students Shannon, said that if there was ablogging prize for the most outstanding blogger she would like to give it to Nadine and I think I agree.
My kids love blogging but just as they were getting into it our school server was updated and edublogs went walkabout……..they were seriously frustrated!

What a fantastic concept Sue. Thank you! Yet another great reason why we should promote blogging and, in particular Edublogs in schools. I have to admit, I was a little frustrated last week as this term saw the introduction of our very first Edublogs projects. However, we all know that when it comes to IT, things never go quite to plan! Thanks to you and your team for continuing to provide us with such a wonderful, free service to schools.

@ Easton Ellsworth No problem at all. We had made a commitment to Collis Ta’eed a few weeks ago to promote the event to the educational blogging community. Unfortunately server issues delayed my plans. Miss Wyatt, one of our community members, is running a student blogging competition and she is using this as their task for this week. Currently there are over 200 students around the World involved.
@Mrs Cunningham Nadine’s post was amazing. I told Miss Wyatt about blog Action Day and asked her whether she felt it would fit with the theme of the student blogging competition. She liked it and added it as a task for this week. Nadine’s post is a result of that task — I just wish I could write as well as Nadine.
We can’t apologise enough for the server issues that occurred this last week — understandably the students would have been frustrated.
@Lucy Barrow It is an excellent project to do with students and it was on my plans to promote it earlier but as you say sometimes things happen

@Marie Yes there is. I should add that to my to-do list of blog posts. You can schedule posts to automatically publish at a later date. Where it says Publish Status in your write area — it has Publish Immediately with an Edit next to it — click on Edit and you can change the time and date.
